Quote

A great deal of talent is lost to the world for want of a little courage. Every day sends to their graves obscure men whose timidity prevented them from making a first effort. – Sydney Smith

Take the first step toward something you’ve been wanting to do—personal or professional – there’s no better time to start than now. That’s the hardest part. Just take the first step.

COACHES CORNER

Running in the Heat with DPT & Certified Run Coach Dr. Katherine Campbell

Summer heat can significantly impact your running performance and enjoyment. One common challenge is an elevated heart rate (HR). But why does this happen, and what can you do about it?

Your body is a finely tuned machine striving for homeostasis or a stable internal environment. When you run, especially in hot conditions, your body works overtime to cool down through sweating.

This sweating process requires water, and if you’re dehydrated, your body can’t sweat as efficiently. This leads to decreased plasma volume in your blood, which, in turn, increases your heart rate as it works harder to circulate blood.

Everyone’s hydration needs are unique and influenced by factors like body weight, sweat rate, and intensity of exercise. However, a general guideline for runs exceeding an hour is to consume between 50 to 250 milliliters of fluid every 20 minutes.

Remember, this is just a starting point. Pay attention to your body’s signals and adjust accordingly!

VITALIZER OF THE MONTH: MELISSA BIEN

Each month, we will highlight athletes and members of our community who embody what it means to be a Vitalizer. We are excited to announce that our Vitalizer of the Month for July is Melissa Bien!

Melissa is a Jersey City resident who has fallen in love with running and the running community we’ve created here. When she’s not running all over town, she’s cooking up something good in the kitchen. We are waiting for a Melissa’s Meals x VTLZR collab!

She’s been an active member of the Vitalizer Run Club since its early days. She’s completed 5 half marathons, numerous 5Ks, and 10Ks, and is currently training for the NYC Marathon in November. We can’t wait to see her crush it with The Girl Scouts of Greater New York.

She is a staple of the crew, encouraging and supporting others and always bringing positive energy to every run, and even led the Vitalizer Run Crew on July 16th at the Ice Cream Social.

Thank you for all you do, Melissa! Congrats on being our July Vitalizer of the Month!

Spray-On Sneakers Take the Running World by Storm

Swiss sportswear brand On just unveiled a revolutionary sneaker that’s literally sprayed on. That’s right, no laces, no glue, just a futuristic robot and some high-tech material. The Cloudboom Strike LS are not only lightweight but are claimed to be more supportive and dynamic than traditional running shoes.

Kenyan running star Hellen Obiri won the Boston Marathon wearing them and is set to compete in the Paris Olympics with them as well.

It’s not from a sci-fi movie (we thought it was, too). On believes this spray-on tech is groundbreaking not only for performance but also for the environment. The process reduces carbon emissions by a whopping 75% compared to traditional sneaker manufacturing.

That’s all for today. Thank you again for being a part of this incredible community.

Stay hungry, stay hybrid, and remember: Movement is the Movement.

See you soon!
